The goals at Emerald Ranch in all of our activities are to show riders the fun of western riding while teaching good techniques of safe and effective control of their horse. We have something for riders of all levels in our summer camps. RIDER LEVELS Level 1 - Little or no training in riding or safe handling of horses. Level 2 - Had training in basics of horse safety, handling (groom, hoof care, saddle & bridle) and riding, but not yet able to walk and trot independently, correctly and under control. Level 3 - Had training in, and can demonstrate, basics of horse safety, handling and riding, and can walk and trot independently, correctly and under control. Level 4 - Level 3 riders who can also change leads, collect and extend walk and trot, maneuver obstacles and back their horse. Horsemanship Basics, Safety and Beginning Riding Riders receive six (6) hours of instruction which include basic rules of safe horse handling, grooming, leading, saddling, correct mounting and dismounting, proper body, hand and leg positions in the saddle and how to control their horse at a walk and trot. Riders will also learn horse breeds, body parts, colors, psychology, how to tie safety knots and proper feeding and care of horses. Starting in June - Tues & Wed 9 am - 12 pm
Saddle Time A riding class for students who have been instructed and understand the fundamentals horse safety, saddling, mounting and handling but who simply need additional time in the saddle to more fully grasp the elements of balance in the saddle and control of the horse. Class will consist primarily of riding with instruction focused on independently controlling the horse in a walk and a trot, as well as effective stops, starts, turns and maneuvering obstacles.
Saddle Time II This is two hours of riding with the goal of progressing each rider through the stages of improving their western riding skills. Class sizes are kept small to allow for greater attention to the needs of each rider. Each session will start with grooming and tacking of their horses then will include two hours of individual instruction on such techniques as rein and leg ques, "soft" hands, posting at a trot and cantering. More advanced instruction will include extended walk and trot, changing leads and collection This riding class will also include instruction on basic school figures (serpentines, figure 8's,etc.) and running obstacle courses. Held on Friday afternoons
Classes for little children tailored to their needs and limitations. Our goal is not to just lead them around on a pony but to teach them how to be safe around horses, basics of grooming and "saddling up" and how to ride. (We always have one wrangler with each child when riding.). Most children will finish a session feeling comfortable handling and riding a pony at the walk.
